Adrie Heijnen
Sexologist-therapist NVVS

Background

By profession, I am a General Practitioner (GP) and additionally specialized in sexology. I completed a two-year training program for this at the RINO in Amsterdam (in 2005-06). Alongside my work as a GP, I established an independent sexology practice: Seksuologie Centrum Amsterdam. Now that I have ceased practicing as a GP, this sexology practice is being continued under the name: "Vrijbeeld, sexological assistance and education."

The consultation hours are open to anyone who could use some help in the field of sexology. A referral letter from your own GP is not required.

Additionally, I specialize in HIV & sexually transmitted diseases, PrEP and safe sex, and the aging man with urological and sexological complaints. I am also a recognized Gestalt therapist (trained at Kristallijn in Amsterdam), and I regularly use this skill in therapy. Since 2012, I have held the recognition of Fellow of the European Committee of Sexual Medicine (FECSM).

Which sex problems

You can come to me for the most common sexual problems, such as reduced libido and desire, discrepancies in desire and wishes, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation issues (delayed, premature, or absent), pain during intercourse, and vaginismus. In this regard, I have a particular interest in the unusual, such as sex while ill, the influence of medication on sex, sex in old age, sex for the aging man, identity and transgender issues, fetish, and BDSM.

Method

The approach is to assess the issues in one or two sessions and, based on that, determine whether I am the right person for you. If so, I will propose a treatment and/or assessment. Most treatments also include homework assignments and require commitment from you and your potential partner(s).

If I believe you would be better off with someone else, for example, a psychologist specializing in relationship therapy or psychotherapy, I will advise you to make an appointment with such a therapist. I also collaborate with a number of other independent sexologist-psychologists. In addition, sexual issues sometimes require multidisciplinary collaboration. This may involve urologists, gynecologists, rehabilitation physicians, or psychiatrists who have a particular focus on sexual issues. We also collaborate with pelvic floor physiotherapists, haptotherapists, and hypnotherapists. If necessary, I ensure that a proper referral is made.
